Prolog

map and Voidokoilia bay

Adjoining Navarino Bay to the North is the peninsula of ancient Koryphasion (not to be mixed up with modern Koryphasio, a village about 5 km to the Northeast). It was here that the harbour of ancient Pylos, Nestor's palace (see: Ano Englianos), was located. Some Mycenaean remains can be seen in the southern part of the peninsula, some are submerged in the shallow waters of Sykia Straits between ancient Koryphasion and Sphakteria.

North of ancient Koryphasion is the bay of Voidokoilia in the shape of the Greek letter omega. With its fine white sand and the (usually) crystal clear waters it is definitely the most popular beach of Messinia.
